Free State Stadium
2010 World Cup Stadiums – Free State Stadium (Bloemfontein)
Bloemfontein directly translates to mean ‘fountain of flowers’ and is often called the ‘city of roses’, a name appropriate for this South African city because of its annual rose festival and the abundance of flowers in the area. The people of Bloemfontein are known to be friendly and very hospitable, combine this with the Free State Stadium, which has already been used to host international games in both soccer and rugby, and it is no surprise the Bloemfontein was chosen as one of the venues for 2010 FIFA World Cup Matches.
The Free State stadium is often referred to as Vodacom Park during the South African PSL and rugby seasons. The capacity of the stadium was recently increased and it can now seat 48 000 people, allowing it to be successfully used to host matches during the 2009 Confederations Cup. The floodlights, scoreboards, media areas and security have also been upgraded to meet FIFA’s high expectations of a 2010 Soccer World Cup stadium.
