Upington

Although Upington is surrounded by the harsh, dry landscape of the Kalahari, the town itself is situated on the banks of Orange River, providing the town with plenty of water to make it flourish with greenery. A key part of the town’s livelihood comes from its agriculture, as well as tourism and the accompanying services. Fields and vineyards can be seen stretching off into the distance and a few great things to do while in the town are visit the Cotton Ginnery, the SA-Dried Fruit Co-operative and the Orange River Wine Cellars Co-operative, which is the second largest in the world.

With its perfect location in the Orange River Valley, Upington is considered the centre of activity for the whole Kalahari region. People heading to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park or the Augrabies Falls National Park, two of the major attractions in the Northern Cape, will often stop over in Upington for a night or two before moving on. A particularly popular place to stay in Upington is Die Eiland. It is a holiday resort with a pool, tennis courts, and sports fields and so on, but it is most famous for its 1041 meter long palm tree avenue that you drive along as you approach the resorts entrance.
