The Garden Route in South Africa is a very popular scenic route some 200kms long that stretches from the town of Mossel Bay all the way along the east coast to Storm’s River in the extreme east of the Western Cape. The route is bordered on one side by the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains and on the other by the Indian Ocean. Some of South Africa’s most popular tourist friendly towns can be found along the Garden Route. Places like Mossel Bay, George, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley.
The most popular way to explore the Garden Route is to get into your car and just head east from Cape Town. You stay along the coast and soak up all the magnificent views of the oceans and mountains as you drive over hills and down into the most luscious green valleys that you’ll not find anywhere else in the Western Cape. Although this is the most common way to take in the sights that the Garden Route has to offer, the old steam train, called the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe, can take you part of the way, running between the towns of George and Mossel Bay.
The Garden Route contains 10 nature reserves within its borders, the most famous of these being the Tsitsikamma Nation Park. Under the canopy of trees inside this Reserve’s massive forest you can find nearly 200 forms of bird life as well as some leisure activities like canopy tours through the top branches of the trees.
Garden Route Activities
It is not a random occurrence that has led to the Garden Route becoming so popular amongst local South African’s and tourists. Nor is it only the natural beauty of the green landscape lying adjacent to the often sparkling blue ocean. The Garden Route is absolutely filled with activities for all the various wants that people might have. There are plenty of lakes and lagoons where you can fish, sail the various forms of boats, ski and wakeboard. If it’s exploring the natural beauty of the landscape that you’re after then you can hike in the mountains or through the enormous forests, you can go diving in the ocean, shark cage dive if you’re brave enough, there are beaches to surf at, cliffs to abseil and bungee jump off and when the sun goes down you can settle down in one of the world class hotels or for a little more intimacy you can stay in a little seaside or mountain cabin.
